Private Samuel Joseph Francey

Samuel Joseph Francey was born on 24 November 1892 at Lisorty, Clones, County Monaghan, the third of four children of farmer Samuel Francey and his wife Lizzie Anne (nee Hawthorne). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Lisorty with his three sibilngs and working on the family farm, their parents having died in recent years.

Francey enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 October and 16 November 1912 (No.757 – later Corps of Hussars No.71095). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

Francey remained with the regiment throughout the war, though how much time he spent in France and Belgium and how much at the Antrim depot is not known at present. On 26 February 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
